HomeImprovementContractors.com does not make recommendations or endorse any specific service provider or contractor. It is up to you the service user to complete your due diligence in selecting a contractor or service provider which you determine is qualified in completing your specific need.
a) On any contractor or service provider you consider request and verify recommendations from previous customers. Verbally and visually verify previous work completed by a contractor or service provider under consideration.
b) Get it in writing. When completing a home improvement or construction project the bids for the job are often based on what can be seen or what is described with no unexpected occurances or delays. For instance if you were installing an inground pool and when digging the hole rock is unexpectedly discovered. You need to know before this happens what costs and courses of actions you have. Also any upgrades and any additional item work orders should indicate the cost and be signed by service provider as well as customer.
c) Never pay for the entire project before is is 100% complete. Generally with any bids a contractor or service provide will require a deposit ranging form 20%-50% of the total cost. This often depends on the cost of materials or special orders associated with and specific project. Compare deposit requirements among your different proposals to determine if the contractor of your choice is within the market norm.
d) If the project you are having completed requires a service provider with insurance or licenses get a copy of the license and/or proof of insurance before any work is completed. Again verify that licenses and insurance is in good standing before any work is completed.
e)A written deadline. Your contract for the job should include a date certain by which time all work is to be completed. Consideration show be included for special order or custom made items which may not be on schedule. Your time frame agreement should clearly state under what reasons work can be stopped or held up. There should also be condition set forth for the job not being completed within time period of contract.
f) It is the user of the services provided that is responsible for any background checks of any subcontractors or subcontractors involved in any work.
